The Package

Escorting the caravan

through the mountain pass,

a troop of armed men

flank the carriage,

wielding swords, maces,

crossbows, and axes.

The air is thin and cold,

yet no one complains,

for there are more pressing concerns

than the comfort of a mere few.

Priest clutches his crucifix

and mutters prayers into

the howling wind.

He raises a bottle and splashes

blessed water on the carriage.

The four horses forge on,

their mighty breaths pluming

in great white clouds

before them, blessedly naive

of the wickedness they tow.

A large white mist coats the ground

like a fleece.

The pace is slow,

and the destination

remains distant.

The monastery

sits atop the mountain.

Only the priests who dwell

within its walls know

how to rid the kingdom

of this evil.

Wolves howl and snarl in the distance.

The horses stomp their hooves,

and neigh anxiously,

refusing to travel any further.

Priest continues reciting prayers.

The men glance nervously

up and down the path.
