Chapter 13. The Rules of Breathwork

There are three important rules to breathwork that I will explain below. I know no one likes rules, but I assure you that these rules are not here to fence you in or confine you. Following these three rules will help you get more out of your sessions and ensure a long and safe practice.

Rule #1—Breath training is focus training. If your goal is to use your breathing to control your state or to improve your athletic performance, you must learn to focus. Just think about what you are doing. You are trying to take conscious command of a system that is designed to be automatic and controlled fully through the sensory inputs from your environment. You can’t expect to be flipping through your phone while you practice. You are trying to do something that is impossible for all other animals, and this means that you will need to establish a high level of focus and self-awareness.
