ANNA AND I were sitting on the back deck. It was one o’clock in the afternoon, and I was having my first mug of coffee of the day. Man, was it a good thing I had the week off.

That hadn’t been my first reaction when I heard the city was going to shut down most operations for two weeks during the holidays. Apparently they did that every year—only kept on a skeleton crew. And no work meant no pay. I had enough money put aside to be okay—barely—but it still made me mad.

Until today.

“So.” Anna set down her mug. “You and Lori stayed up awhile last night.”

“Yeah, we walked to the park. Got to talking, lost track of time. She up yet?”

“I think so. I heard the shower a little while ago.”

“Where’s Mike?”

“Gone to the store for me.”

Good. There was something I wanted to ask Anna, and I needed privacy to do it. “Want more coffee?” Stalling, I stood up to go refill my cup. When I got back, I handed Anna’s mug back to her. “You know that stuff I told you? About the foster home and the fire?”

“Yeah.”

“Have you mentioned any of that to Lori?”

“No, it’s never come up.”

Relief.

“Why do you ask? Are you thinking she should know about it?”

“I guess. I mean, I don’t know. Sometime. Of course. I’d like to be the one to tell her is all.”

“I understand. And I give you my word I won’t mention it. The story is yours to tell whenever you think the time is right.”

Anna stood up and stretched. “Thought I’d make pizza for dinner. Lori loves my homemade crust.”

“I knew she was a girl with good taste.” Anna’s pizza was amazing, especially the crust. Who knew you could even make pizza at home?

“Lori has extraordinary taste. And not just in food.” Anna raised her eyebrows over her mug.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Like I didn’t know.

“Nothing.” She shrugged. “Just an observation; that’s all.”
