Chapter Eight

I won’t go into details on that first day in New York, but I will mention a few things, one of them quite surprising.

I really had never liked shopping like most guys, but I actually had fun that day. No, wait. Before you call the authorities to have them come and take my man card, let me explain. It was the coven bond. I mean, the women really loved shopping. My women did, at any rate, and it was also a novel first time experience for them.

So really, it was hard to be bored or annoyed by it, when I could feel all those emotions of excitement and joy coming from the fourteen of them. That kind of thing had an influence on my own emotions, and of course I loved them too, which made a difference. All of them, at least on a family friend level, so it was pleasure to see and experience that first shopping expedition with them. To share their first day in a city, in the heart of civilization, where they didn’t have to risk their lives to trade oranges for some bolts of cloth to make their own clothes with earth magic.

So it wasn’t really the shopping I liked, it was their warmth, exuberance, and joy in the day that thoroughly took the sting out of it.

Raine also must’ve mentioned her last encounter with me to my ladies, and how much I’d enjoyed it, because all my lovers spent some time in Victoria Secrets that day, clearly another win for me.

The bus wasn’t hard to drive either, it was closer to an extended van really, just a little thicker and a little longer, with a lockable luggage compartment underneath it.

It felt really weird to have my wallet, bank accounts, and phone back. I won’t admit to tearing up, but that was also the moment it finally sunk in. My adoptive parents, that I’d mourned, were alive again from my point of reference. No longer centuries buried and gone, so that was quite a boost to my day as well. I decided to call them the first chance I got.

There was no point in calling my old boss. I’d been a no-show timeline speaking, for five weeks, and I had no intention of going back to the construction job anyway. My last partial check had been deposited automatically a few weeks ago.

My Citibank account was also a lot bigger than I remembered it being, by three decimal points. No doubt Sela had done that, a deposit, so I could pay for everything and not look like a loser leaching from his hot rich girlfriend to the human world. That wasn’t reality, but for those outside the supernatural community, it’s exactly what it would look like. I’d never been all that prideful, but I won’t lie and say it wasn’t nice not to have to deal with that false judgement from strangers.

Old friends… well the coven was my life now, and I honestly didn’t have
