Chapter 9

At breakfast the next day, Billie explained everything to her parents and asked if they knew Leroy’s parents had been ill.

“He never said a word to us,” Billy declared. “I often thought he looked tired but they live right on the other side of town so we never see them”

“You know we don’t get out much, dear, so we don’t get to chat with the town folk,” her mother added. “Nancy visits sometimes. She mentioned her daughter had seen him in a bar in town a few times. I just assumed he was out having a good time, getting on with his life. Such a good boy to take care of his parents that way. I’d always thought he didn’t go to New York because you’d had a bust up, but this explains everything. You wouldn’t still have gone if you’d known would you?”

Billie studied her coffee cup as she contemplated the question. Would she have stayed? She’d been so excited about leaving, but then she’d thought Leroy would follow. Luckily, her mother didn’t expect an answer and was soon chatting about Leroy’s new businesses.

She left them to it and headed to the workshop, even though it was Sunday. The body shop had called Friday to say they were slammed and asked if they could make her delivery Saturday afternoon, when they were closed.

She hadn’t minded, staying open and working on until they arrived, then leaving them to use the winch on their truck to lower the body back onto the chassis while she busied herself tidying up after shutting down the shop for the night. When she’d made her way over, they were done, the tarp back in place covering the Deuce. They’d told her to check it out whenever she had time and call them on Monday to let them know if she was happy or had any issues. Part of her was disappointed she hadn’t seen it, or even caught so much as a glimpse, while another part of her was glad. She’s already been running behind for her girls’ night. The car had called to her and the tarp practically begged to be lifted up but she’d resisted all temptation, simply giving it a pat and walking away, leaving the car below like a prized secret waiting to be discovered. It had been a thrill knowing she had it to look forward to, the anticipation that would build for the rest of the night only making it more exciting. Now it was time; her first chance to look at the respray. If there was going to be anything that would keep her mind off things it would be the Deuce.

Almost reverently, she took hold of the tarp and lifted it up, laughing aloud as she took a peek underneath, the vibrant candy shell looking so good she could take a bite. She squealed and dropped the tarp, running on the spot in her delight. Like a fighter about to enter the ring, she swung her arms, warming up her shoulders, taking deep puffing breaths, steeling herself for the big moment.
