Chapter Two

Holly McCade switched her position on the university park bench, crossing her left leg over her right and stretching her right arm across the back of the bench. She turned her head, taking in the landscape all the way around her. Colorado was gorgeous in the fall, and Greeley was no exception. Though it was too early for the aspen leaves to turn their traditional shades of yellow, orange and gold, the day was still vivid with color.

Greeley lay on the eastern plains, and Holly could see the green and brown patchwork of farmland and ranchland from where she sat. And though there were one or two taller buildings marring the view, she could even see the front range of the Rocky Mountains in all their majestic splendor, far enough away to require a plan, but close enough for a drive.

Students milled around between classes, talking, studying or playing Frisbee on the lawn. Birds chattered from the trees, and there was even a big brown squirrel helping himself to lunch from a convenient garbage barrel.

It was all very nice, and she might even have enjoyed the morning sunshine and the lovely views, except that she wasn’t sitting here to spend half her Saturday watching university students play games and hungry squirrels rummage for food.

She was waiting for Colin Brockman.

With a loud sigh, she glanced at her watch.

Again.

She didn’t know why she’d offered to do this—meet with a man she hardly knew and wasn’t completely sure she liked. Probably she was under some misguided, philanthropic notion that she could help him broaden his horizons on his way to a better understanding of child psychology.

And to have waited over an hour for him—she must really be losing it. She wasn’t the young woman with low self-esteem who’d do anything for a man she might have been in her youth. Anything but!

She should go. She could be busy with something else. Her time was important, and Colin obviously didn’t respect that. Or respect her, for that matter.

She should have gone with her first impression, she decided. Colin was nothing more than an overgrown kid with mischief in his heart.

She suddenly recalled all those little things she noticed about him that clinched her first opinion—the cut of his uneven hair, the day’s growth of beard on his face. Even his clothes looked like he’d thrown them on from where they’d once lay crumpled, probably on the floor of his bedroom.

He was a rascal, all right.

A late rascal.

Anger and frustration welled up inside her heart. Anger at herself. Why had she bothered waiting?

She sighed and reached for her bag. She already knew the answer to that question before she asked it of herself.

First impression of him notwithstanding, when she’d spoken with Colin two days ago in the auditorium and he’d voiced his very clever and fervent thoughts on Maslow’s theory, she’d sensed something exceptional about him, something that drove away every thought of his scruffy appearance and reeled her in to his charm. He fascinated her with the inkling that there was something more to him than his outward appearance.
