Chapter Six

The effect of her words was immediate and electric. Logan’s head snapped up and he glared down at her where she lay

pinned beneath him. The rugged planes of his face were drawn into an almost violent expression and the gleaming

eyes were barely visible through narrowed lids.

„Affair!“ he repeated, his voice grating across Hilary’s nerves. Suddenly he seemed very heavy as he covered her

softness there on the bed. „You want me to prove my love by having an affair with you? No way, Hilary. I’ve already

told you I’m going to marry you. I’d go out of my mind trying to control you without the extra bonds of marriage. Don’

t you think I’ve learned a lesson from the way you treat Thome? Do you think I could stand the thought of you with

another man?“

„What about me? I’ve had to learn some lessons, too, from the previous three candidates,“ she whispered

hopelessly. „Don’t you think I have a right to find out for certain how you really feel about me? If you insist on

marriage I’ll never know for sure whether it’s me or my father’s holdings you want…“

„Listen, woman,“ he snarled, his fingers digging painfully into the smooth skin of her shoulder. „I swear you’ll

know exactly how I feel after tonight…“

„A typical male approach! You think sex solves everything, don’t you? That afterward I’ll be pliant and tractable?“

„You will,“ he agreed ruthlessly, „For a while, at least!“

„You don’t sound to me like a man in love,“ Hilary said, her voice breaking slightly as she tried to control her

emotions.

„You don’t think a man can’t lose his patience with his woman and still love her? I’ve got news for you!“

„Logan, please! Listen to me,“ she begged. „Everything has happened so suddenly. You’ve moved into my life and

tried to take control as if you had a right to do so.“

„Sometimes a man has to make his own rights, Hilary,“ he murmured more gently, his hands stroking through a

heavy length of hair lying across her throat.

„Spoken like a true businessman,“ Hilary retorted bitterly. „That’s probably exactly what the old robber barons

used to say before they took over a new enterprise!“

He shrugged, his broad, naked shoulders moving slightly in the dimly lit room. „So? I appear to have the weight of

tradition behind me, in that case. Come, Hilary, stop trying to reason with me and try loving me instead. I promise it will

be much more satisfying!“ He bent his head and nuzzled her ear, his palm moving over the nipple of her breast in a

lazy, tantalizing fashion that sent another in a series of shivers through Hilary.

„Logan,“ she tried again, clinging to what little rationality still remained in her befogged brain. „I’d… I’d be faithful

in an affair, if that’s what you’re worried about. I promise there would be no other men…“ How could there be other

men after Logan Saber, Hilary concluded silently.

„You’re too independent,“ he told her, his hand trailing down across the vulnerable softness of her stomach,

making its way much lower. „Even if I could manage to
