An hour later only a tenth of the presents had been opened and they had all had too much coffee, too much left-over wedding cake and were all feeling a tad silly.

Kensey had been put in charge of folding the wrapping paper. Ava had no idea why as her mother would never deign to reuse any such thing. But it also meant that she and Caleb now had the couch to themselves.

The chair beneath Ava’s bottom lifted as Caleb leaned towards her. He came so close she would have leant away if not for the high arm of the chair digging into her ribs. So instead she was left looking deep into a pair of cheeky hazel eyes that were flashing with the thrill of adventure.

Adventure she was certain by that stage had everything to do with her and the couch.

‘Caleb…’ she warned under her breath.

He reached over her and threw a couple of gift cards he’d been pretending to be interested in into the pile in her lap. ‘I’m going stir crazy here.’

‘Well, tough. You’re the best man—this is your duty.’

‘Who are you to talk of duty, Ms Prodigal Daughter?’

She shot him her dirtiest look complete with curled lip. Caleb reached up, put a finger over her mouth to wipe the look away. She grabbed his hand, held it tight in her lap then quickly looked out over the crowd to make sure nobody noticed. Thankfully everyone was watching Chelsea hold up a crystal bowl to the light, much more excited about the fact that her puppy was chasing the rainbow prisms the bowl was creating on the walls than the extravagant label dangling noticeably off the side.

Ava laughed despite herself and felt a little happy thrill shoot down her centre that her brother had found himself such a truly down-to-earth bride. If Chelsea didn’t bring the Halliburton household down a peg or two nobody could.

A sudden tickle of hair against her neck had her whipping her attention back to Caleb, who was brushing her hair from her shoulder.

‘Are you trying to drive me crazy?’

‘Not at all. You had a…thing on your neck. I was just brushing it off.’

He continued staring at the point where her neck met her shoulder and the happy thrill she’d felt for Damien had nothing on the flash of energy that poured through her every vein at the look in Caleb’s eyes.

‘A thing?’ she repeated, her voice giveaway deep.

His gaze slowly meandered up her neck to her face and she felt every centimetre his gaze touched heat from the inside out.

When his eyes met hers they were dark. Shadowed. ‘Can we please—?’

‘I like the look of this one,’ Chelsea called out as she picked up a foot long silver box and shook it.

Caleb breathed out hard through his nose and his frustration seeped into Ava until she had to wiggle her toes to lose some of the excess energy coursing through her.

‘Ooh, what if it’s those new Versace salad servers?’ Rachel said, eyes bright.

‘No, I recognise the paper,’ Kensey said.
