Chapter 5

An Unearthly Journey

Squeak and Brutus curled up together in one big ball to keep each other warm while Bubby climbed up on the log and started his vigil. He peered up through the trees and fixed his gaze on the star-filled sky above thinking about how he almost drown. As he watched he thought to himself, how simple life is and yet how complex all at the same time and how it could all end in just a blink of an eye.

As he gazed, a shooting star shot across the sky. It frightened Bubby and soon every little shadow started to spook him. “Now I’m acting like Squeaky,” he thought. He tried to keep his mind on more positive things.

The long fur of his coat was still damp and the chill of the late night air was starting to seep into his bones. As he watched into the night he began to shiver. He walked back and forth on the log but he just couldn’t seem to get warm. And the thought of drowning just made him shiver more.

“You all right, Bubby?” came a groggy voice. “Is that your teeth chatterin’?”

“It’s this damp fur,” said Bubby. “I just can’t get warm. Can I curl up with you guys to stay warm? I’ll stay awake and keep watch. I just need to get warm.”

“Sure. Get in here between the two of us,” said Brutus.

So Bubby crawled between his brother and his good friend and before long the chills went away. He kept his watch from there. But soon things felt too cozy lying between those two warm bodies. His eyelids grew heavy and he dozed off.

He began to dream. He felt like he was flying through the black of night. Floating effortlessly, endlessly. Floating until finally he landed on his feet. Cheering cats surrounded him as he briefly caught a glimpse of hundreds of cats all around him. Before he got his bearings he was flying again. Up, up, up and then he floated back down again landing on his feet. And the crowd cheered on and once again he flew skyward into the star-filled sky. This time when he landed the cheers ceased and as he looked around all he could see were cats bowed down in reverent adoration.

He realized he was standing in the center of a colorful, round blanket held by six very large cats. Slowly the cats lowered the blanket to the ground and when all was settled, they too bowed down to Bubby.

Bubby stood there in amazement until one of the cats stood up and approached him. It was Squeaky. He was dressed in a fancy, gold trimmed gown and he wore a gold collar around his neck and a tall gold hat.

“Your carriage awaits you, your highness,” he said gesturing toward a gilded carriage with four rabbits harnessed to it.

Bubby began to walk and as he did he realized his coat of long, white and orange fur was even longer than he remembered it to be.
