Chapter Fifteen

The next day Iris was passed fit to return to duty, and so the week passed in the usual round of watches, knitting and visits to the Heddles. Rob, who had returned to the Kelpie, had been unable to get any more leave, and Iris missed him with a pang of longing that took her by surprise. As the days went by, her misgivings about courting him faded until she could only remember their kisses and how wonderful they had felt. She went through the week feeling as though she were enclosed in a warm bubble of sunshine. For some reason, although she told Sally and Mary about their walk, she couldn’t bring herself to confess to the new turn in their relationship. It all felt too new, and she wanted to keep it to herself for a while longer without having to endure their inevitable teasing.

Even at the end of the week, when the weather deteriorated into squally showers, it couldn’t dampen her spirits. As she walked with Sally to Kyeness for the morning watch, she let herself lapse into a happy daydream.

‘Iris, have you heard a word I’ve been saying?’ Sally’s voice jolted Iris back to the present, and it was something of a shock to find herself on the hillside with rain stinging her eyes, Sally regarding her with hands on hips.

Iris jumped and gave Sally a guilty look. ‘I’m sorry. I was miles away.’

Thankfully, Sally didn’t look too cross. ‘I take it that wherever you were, Rob was with you.’

It was impossible to hold back the smile that seemed to burst from deep within. ‘He might have been.’

‘I knew it!’ Sally looked almost as happy as Iris felt. ‘Didn’t I say he was the one for you?’

‘You did. Several times.’

‘You know what you have to do now?’

‘What?’

‘You have to write to your mother and tell her about Rob.’

Even that couldn’t destroy the glow cocooning Iris’s heart. She had gradually been reaching the same conclusion. ‘I know.’

‘Now I know you’ve got it bad. Aren’t you worried what she’ll think?’

‘Oh, I know what she’ll think. And I’ve decided there are advantages to being in Orkney after all.’

‘Besides the presence of Rob, you mean?’

‘Besides that, yes. If I’d ended up in Portsmouth, nothing would have stopped her from storming down there and laying siege to the place until I saw sense. At least I’m safely out of the way up here.’

The thought of writing to her mother about Rob had also reminded Iris of another unpleasant task. She hadn’t seen Stewart since the accident in the boat, but if he tried to ask her out again, she would have to tell him that she couldn’t see him any more. At least his action on the tender, or lack of action, would make it easier.
