Chapter 14
The next evening, Harper stared at the quiet expanse of grass dotted by a series of tombstones at the top of a hill. The graveyard was lit by a lone spotlight along the gravel path. Fog had risen from the ground in the last hour and obscured the waning moon and city lights, bathing the night in a damp foreboding cocoon.
"Is this really necessary?"
"You don't believe your brother could hurt a child, so I have to show you." With a slow exhale, Mal turned back from laying out a series of candles at each point of a five star pentacle imprinted on the grass. His hair brushed the collar of his coat, his slanted eyebrows giving his features a feral look that was totally fitting in the unnerving setting.
"What if what I see is just an illusion?" She narrowed her eyes at him.
"I wish I was so powerful that I could create visions in your mind."
"Well I don't know that. And I don't know that I can trust you."
Pain shadowed his expression at her words, and she cursed herself. She remembered how quickly he'd wrapped her in his arms with contained emotions for having freed Evan.
She had expected fury from him. Rage at her actions. Yelling that she was dumb and didn't know anything. Because truly, that was what she felt inside. So unsure.
But he'd held her and his voice had been gentle, full of empathy, when heâd told her about the attack on the baby.
"I can't force you to trust me over your brother." He snapped his fingers, and the candles at their feet lit at once, their glow underscoring the planes of his chiseled cheekbones. "I can only show you who he truly is. It will be for you to decide."
Her heart was split. The warlock had stalled her brother's execution. She was still not sure if he had done it for her sake or for his own goal of exterminating the vampires from his city.
But he had done it, nonetheless.
She stared at the ritualistic tools at her feet and shivered. Maybe she just didn't want to see.
And dammit, what if it was all true? What if Evan actually fed on people. On a baby.
She placed a slow hand over the wound at her arm. He had bit her. She had excused it on the fact that he was chained and filthy and miserable. She still remembered him laughing in the diner in Montreal. Saying he'd never kill anyone. It had been easy to believe him then.
But now?
She closed her eyes and took in the earthly scents around her, the sound of sirens from the city, the elements of Mal's favorite corner at the back of St. Mary's graveyard.
"You draw your power from this place?" She asked him to postpone the inevitable.
"The Lin family. Want to meet them?"
Her eyes opened wide. "You mean I can?"
"They all died of a flu they caught as they hid from the mob during the nineteenth century Seattle riot. Sad times." He shook his head.
