“Is all the excitement over?” Darron asks, looking up from the couch.

“Yeah, sure,” I tell him. “Now all we have to do is solve a murder, lure a dirty politician, face down an anti-supe crime syndicate, and put on a decent amateur Shakespeare show.”

“The last one sounds the hardest,” Darron says, his face falling as Kit and Izzy return from the backyard, Shit following behind. “I don’t know how well Freddie can fill Mitzy’s shoes. And that’s not even without considering the frayed ropes, or the holes in the walls.”

“You focus on the show,” I tell him. “You hired me to fix the place up, remember? I’m sure I can just watch a few videos and figure out how to do some light mortaring, and also fix that roof leak.”

“I can fix it,” Kit says. He’s so quiet I almost don’t hear him. Then I turn, remembering I tasked him with fixing my own roof.

“You can fix the theater!” I say to Kit. “Darron said it needed light mortar work. I was going to smack some papier-mâché on it, but you actually know what you’re doing. That is, if you want to…” I know that Kit will do anything I say, but I don’t want to treat him like a servant.

“I want to help,” he says. Then he gives me a look that gets me death glares from both Shauna and Izzy.

“You know what?” I offer, hoping to break the mood, “Let’s all go. Shauna can help too, and Izzy can...do you need to get back to KJ?”

“Not until later,” she says. “His co-parents have him.” Izzy is in a non-romantic relationship with two other people with whom she co-parents. “They understand this is important to me. That Kit is important to me.” She gives Kit such a forlorn look that it almost breaks my heart. I vow to myself that after we figure out the play, after I learn what McGinnis and O.H.I.O. are up to, we’ll get Kit back to her.

But now, I need to drink a gallon of coffee and get this show on the road. “The bus is leaving in one hour. Anyone not ready will be left behind.” I turn to Darron. “Except you. You take as long as you want.”

“Thanks, Paige. I’ll be ready by then.”

An hour and fifteen later, my coffee in hand, I march into the theater behind Darron, or today it’s Daphne. She used her hour to get fabulous. She has a total no nonsense queen vibe, wearing a tight black dress, red heels, and veiled hat à la Jackie O.

I tell Kit what needs to be done and Izzy and Shauna flank him like they’re his assistants, or bodyguards, or both. I guess they’re more like co-contractors, though, because Kit gets a good idea of what needs to be done in the theater (aka everything) and he begins to point at things and beckon to Izzy and Shauna, who are quick to jump to his needs.
