Harrison Peabody still stood on the stone wall at the edge of the lake. He was looking across the water. Rick went over to him. “Sorry I couldn’t get your hat, Harry.”

The wizard felt his bald head. “Did I lose it? Well, never mind. It’s not the first time.”

Barbara remembered the duck. She could still see it swimming through the choppy waves. The water foamed behind it for quite a long time. And now and then something silvery green seemed to loop up into the air out of the foam.

The duck turned to look at them. It dived into the water and came up with something black in its mouth. Then it began to swim in a straight line toward Harrison Peabody.

As it came closer Rick and Barbara saw that it wasn’t a duck at all. It had a head like a lizard’s. And it was covered with shining scales.

When it reached the stone wall, the creature reared its long neck high up out of the water. It placed the black thing it had in its mouth on the wizard’s head.

“Isn’t this your hat, Peabody?” a husky voice said. “I’d know it anywhere.”
