CHAPTER SEVEN

Zeke humored them both. He allowed her to spend a total sum of ninety minutes in the office before shutting it down.

"It's late- go home, shag your mate, get some dinner. The morning is soon enough for this."

So they left, Annina dragging her feet because she knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep that night. Adrenaline rushed through her veins like a turbo shot of espresso. In bed, she tossed and turned until Kavanaugh growled at her and tossed an arm and leg over her body to hold her still. Her body finally sent her to sleep from sheer exhaustion, but as soon as light peeked through the blinds, she was pushing out of bed and rushing through her routine in order to get back into town.

"Damn, female," Zeke growled. "Let me have at least one cup of coffee."

She whirled around, quickly searched through cabinets and brought out a travel mug, thunking it on the table next to him.

"Here."

He growled, but poured the coffee into the mug, muttering under his breath.

"Why are you so tired anyway?" she asked, eyes keen. "Where were you all night?"

The disadvantage of such pale skin made itself known when his cheeks turned... pink.

"Let's go," he said, pushing past her- rather hurriedly.

Annina smiled, filing the incident away to probe later when she was feeling more playful and less like she was strapped to a train track watching a locomotive approach.

Most of the main businesses were in town, except for people who worked from home, and the Fire Eagle Clan offices were no different. They sported two accountants- one now, and she hoped she had the opportunity to fire the woman in person- a sales rep and an office manager. Annina kept her fingers in every pie, preferring the ambiguous role of 'owner' which gave her the freedom to do whatever task she wished. But mostly to make sure everyone else was doing their job to her satisfaction.

"Where's the new accountant?" she asked with a growl when she and Zeke entered the office.

The manager looked up from her desk near the back, curious. "Funny. I was just emailed a resignation. Something going on?"

That was one of the benefits of hiring an outsider. Utter neutrality when it came to Clan business. "Gather everyone in my office for a meeting. Ten minutes."

After the employees were gathered, Annina explained the situation. She was frank- if she was going to tear apart the business and pull out its insides, everyone needed to know what was happening. She set the accountants to pouring over financial records, the office manager to verifying independent contractor’s payments and information. Any hole that involved a possible avenue to funnel money, Annina wanted plugged. An exhausting three days later, she had the grim framework of a jagged puzzle.

Enough to confront her grandfather. Her suspiciously silent on the subject grandfather.

"Let me do this alone," she asked Zeke quietly when they pulled up outside Grandfather’s cabin. He chose to live in the woods, surrounded by forest and as far from modern intrusion as possible, and still have plumbing.
