Chapter Seven

Deacon spied the vineyard as they pulled through the main gate. A river stone wall surrounded the front of the property. Rows and rows of vines ran perpendicular to the lane and climbed up the side of the hill nearby. They rode down a long hard-packed dirt lane until they pulled in front of what looked like an old hunting lodge.

He climbed out of his car, looking around at the scenery. A lot of work had been done, especially since Glenn had explained the farm had just been started a few years before. Several outbuildings lined up behind the lodge and a myriad of people worked, loading cases of wine onto the back of a truck.

One of them in particular caught his attention.

A male. Young. Handsome. An omega.

Heat flashed through him when the male turned and met his stare. His cock thickened… his heart slammed into his chest… he couldn’t breathe.

He heard the other door slam and turned to see Glenn watching him closely. His stomach twisted into a knot.

What the hell?

“Hey, Glenn,” a male said, jumping down from the truck and eyeing Deacon closely. “What can I do for you?”

“I wanted to introduce a guest here in Bear Mountain—who might be staying a while,” Glenn paused and turned to Deacon, who’d been staring at the young male helping to load the boxes. “Gideon, this is Deacon. Declan has asked him here to help us with our werewolf issue.”

“About damned time,” Gideon said, offering Deacon a hand. “What’s the plan?”

“I just arrived. I need to assess the situation and see what we can do to solve the problem,” Deacon said, staring at the truck. “You heading out for a delivery?”

“We’re going to try,” Gideon said. “As soon as we get loaded up and armed.”

“Armed?” Glenn asked.

“I’m tired of this shit. I’m tired of losing product. We’re headed out with rifles and shotguns. One truck ahead, one behind—both of them watching for those damned wild dogs. They will shoot on sight. Those bastards aren’t getting anywhere near this load.”

Just then, another male walked out of the house, carrying several weapons. He eyed Deacon carefully before walking over.

“Good morning, Garren. I’d like you to meet Deacon,” Glenn said.

“Glenn, Deacon,” he said nodding, not offering a hand—but they were full.

“Do you really think guns will stop them?” Deacon asked.

“With silver bullets? Yeah,” Garren said.

“Not all breeds are susceptible to silver,” Deacon said. “Have you had success with it?”

“Not personally,” Gideon said. “But I heard it will hurt them, so we’re going to try.”

“Who’s going with you?” Deacon asked, looking at the truck again and getting a look at the male inside it.

“Everyone we can muster,” Garren said. “Most of these guys are our farmhands or work in the winery.”

Deacon turned to Glenn. “Perhaps I should go with them—see what the issues are. You can take my car and head home. I can meet you when I get back?”

“I can go, too,” Glenn said, taking a rifle from Garren and checking it for ammo.
