Chapter 21

After considering some different flight options, Pauling had decided to go back to New York. For one thing, Tallon was in Mexico and was working so it wasn’t like she could join him. Her only living relative was her sister, who lived in Portland. Pauling had just been out to see them.

Especially considering how quickly she’d left New York, it made sense to go back, wait for Tallon to finish his gig in Mexico City, and then go from there.

She took the ferry back to the mainland, caught a flight and was soon unlocking the door to her loft. It felt good to be back home. She unpacked, showered and changed.

There weren’t any messages and she knew in the morning she would have to go out and get some food. The only thing in the fridge was a bottle of chardonnay which she uncorked. After pouring herself a glass, she checked her email, expecting a reply from Randall Naughton.

But there wasn’t one.

She had emailed him her final bill during the flight back to the States. It was the kind of thing that usually deserved a response of sorts. Pauling had a funny feeling about the situation–it had begun when Naughton had so abruptly ended their conversation and her investigation. It had also been odd the way she’d asked him a question and it seemed like there had been a pause while he was typing. The whole thing had been a little strange to begin with.

Obviously, she’d gone because of the possibility the missing child was Reacher’s. That was something she was now convinced simply wasn’t true. Women tended not to forget Jack Reacher and she was positive Rubi wasn’t lying.

So why had Naughton’s client suspected otherwise? More importantly, who was Naughton’s client?

Pauling knew she could just let the whole thing go, but she didn’t want to.

She decided then and there that she wasn’t going to let it slide. Pauling found her iPad and looked up Naughton’s firm. She was going to pay them a visit in person. Pauling found the firm’s website and jotted down the address. While she was there, she clicked on the section of the website marked About Us. The principals, including Naughton, were listed but there were no photographs.

She found a link to their public relations section and clicked her way through various news releases until she found one that included a group shot of the head of the firm.

Pictured in the center was Randall Naughton.

Pauling put down her wineglass and stared at the picture.

Because the man in the photo in no way resembled the Randall Naughton who’d sent her to Belize.
