Three days.
Three days since Spencer came back to Magnolia.
Three days since I felt like I could breathe.
It was different when he was in Harmony. When he was there, I could pretend that he was thinking about me. I could pretend that he was fixing his relationship with his girls and that he would eventually come back to me.
But now that dream was crushed. Pulverized. Smashed on the ground in front of me.
He had no intention of getting back together with me. He had no intention of telling me that he was sorry. Or that he loved and missed me.
We were officially done.
And my heart was broken.
Tears stung my eyes as I stared at my reflection. I cursed myself for letting my mind wander yet again. Nothing good ever came from the quiet moments I found myself in. When I stopped and let myself think, I spiraled.
When I spiraled, I found myself with a bottle of wine in one hand and my phone in the other. I found myself writing out text messages I was dangerously close to sending.
If I was going to survive this break up, I needed to keep myself busy. I straightened, angrily wiped my cheeks, and focused on applying my foundation.
Thankfully, I made it through my morning routine and only thought about Spencer twice. My coffee maker was finished, so I poured a travel mug full and headed out of the apartment Iâd found a few weeks ago. It had been strange living at Spencerâs house while he wasnât there, so Iâd packed up and left.
Iâd once allowed myself to wonder if he would notice or care that I was gone. I thought about his reaction when he walked into his house only to find it empty. But from his total lack of acknowledgement of my existence, I doubted he cared.
Which meant I needed to stop caring.
âBe strong,â I mumbled under my breath as I grabbed my keys out of my purse and pulled open the front door.
The drive to the Daily was uneventful. By the time I pulled into the parking lot and turned off the engine, my coffee was gone. Thankfully, Victoriaâs car was parked in the back. I hoped sheâd picked up some breakfast and coffee. There was no way I was going to survive until lunch on one coffee.
I pulled my jacket closed as I hurried across the parking lot and pulled open the front door. The bell chimed as the door shut behind me.
Victoria was rushing around her desk. I parted my lips to greet her, but she beat me to it. âI wonât be here today,â she said as she shoved her laptop into her purse.
I frowned. âUm, okay,â I said as I hoisted my purse up onto my shoulder.
She paused and glanced over at me. âBrett was in an accident last night. Heâs going to be discharged today, and Iâll need to take care of him.â
My heart sank. âIâm so sorry. Is there anything I can do to help?â
She shook her head for a moment but then paused.
