I awoke sometime after ten, on the sofa, with Jack Colton spread out next to me, and Joan Wilder curled up under my feet. I couldn’t bear to even look at my bedroom last night when I stumbled in sometime around one. I brushed my teeth, slipped out of my shoes and jeans, grabbed the blanket off the swordfish in the corner, and drifted off with my sweet dogs by my side.

I needed to get out of the house, so I filled water bowls, poured out some kibbles for my two pups, did all the bathroom stuff including scrubbing my face, pulled my hair up in a bun on the top of my head, slipped into running clothes and shoes, put both dogs on their leashes, and off we went for a walk/run.

We hadn’t gone more than two feet when Sandy sent me a text asking if she could meet us in town. I told her we were running, and she insisted we run in town, with her, which we usually did on the weekends, anyway. Seeing as how this was Saturday, it worked fine for me.

I piled the dogs in my extended-cab, black pickup and met her on Frog Street in front of Tales on Frog Street bookstore, one side was all kids’ books, while the other side was for everyone else. Sandy had a three-year-old Jack Russel named Eddie that fit right in with Joan and Jack. All three dogs loved to play together, and even though Eddie was much smaller, he held his own.

“What are you going to do?” she asked as soon as she walked up to us. I’d been busy peeking in the window at the regular part of the bookstore, wondering if I should stop in and buy a book. Thinking a book might be what I needed to calm me down, give me some perspective, and teach me something new. Of course, I was attracted to the MC Romance with the guy in an open leather jacket on the cover with tats on his chest, looking like a bad, hard man.

“Buy a book and read it. I used to like to read when I was a teen.”

“Yeah, well, those days are gone, so don’t you even think about it now,” Sandy said, her reflection on the glass window. Our dogs were already pulling on their leashes, trying to get to one another.

“You don’t even know what I was looking at,” I told her.

“I know exactly what you’re looking at… that biker dude in leather. You can’t fool me.”

“Maybe I was thinking about buying that women’s fiction book with the picture of the empty beach chair and sand and pink towels.”

That book and that scene had no appeal to me whatsoever. I didn’t think I even knew anyone who would read that book… unless maybe Connie Manors who worked in Sweetie Pies. She might read a book like that, but then I didn’t know Connie other than to order something to go from her.
