Different Types of Breath
Going back to the Vedas, there are around fifty different types of breathing. I’ve pulled together some of the most popular types that are accessible to any and all.
BREATH AWARENESS
HOW TO DO IT: Start by lying on your back, with palms to the sky and full body relaxed. Start to notice the physical sensation of when your rib cage expands and your lower belly empties. Take one hand to your heart, one hand to your lower belly. Use this tactile feedback to observe your breath. Where are you holding tension, even in the most relaxed pose you could be in? Is there unevenness in your breath cycles? Begin to take deep breaths in and out for six to twelve cycles.
WHY DO IT? With all we have going on as humans, breath is the last thing on our minds. So what happens to your body when you lie down and actually turn your attention to your ribcage? This helps bring awareness to your breath and body, as well as create a sense of calmness in your mind. You might find it useful to go through this process on nights when you have difficulty sleeping.
