Elhaz or Algiz: the Elk or Eel-grass

STRENGTHS, SYMBOL-SIDE UP: Facing difficulties head-on and resolving them; altruism; rising high through achievement and battling to fulfill a dream; good employment prospects, especially after a period of unemployment or threats to livelihood

CHALLENGES, BLANK-SIDE UP: Seeking an easy fix to problems or denying their existence, taking the route of least resistance, not seeing beyond the immediate situation

Elhaz is a multi-meaing rune. The Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem, the only one to mention this rune, interprets the rune as eel-grass, which is found in marshes and which “grimly wounds . . . any man who tries to grasp it.” This sharp grass represents the nettle that is hard to grip but, once it has been seized, is traditionally useful for thatching, kindling for the fire, and bedding for animals.

The rune shape also represents the antlers of an elk, another translation, which can be used in attack or defense. It also indicates resources that are available to act powerfully and altruistically.

Above all, it speaks of the higher spiritual self and the need to develop one’s spiritual nature while at the same time living within the world.
