At the reservoir a gentle mist fell against her skin, spritzing it and coating her hair in a fine spray that clung to the ends. Combined with the morning air, it was refreshing and invigorating, lending impetus to her movements as she jogged the familiar route over a field towards the woodlands. She spoke to Chris. ‘It’s either Rosa or Stanka that they’ve found dead. I have to wait for confirmation of identity, but what should I do once that happens?’

She rounded a gnarled trunk carbuncled with time, its roots and lower trunk mossy and its branches misshapen and twisted, some mere stumps, broken off in hard-fought attacks from the weather to emerge battle-scarred but victorious.

‘Chris, I need you more now than ever. You can’t desert me, not while this is going on. I know I should have made sure Tom Champion was in a more secure safe house or forced him to make a full confession of his own free will sooner. I should have found Rosa before Dickson. And I didn’t do any of those things because I didn’t want Dickson to suspect me. I thought I had more time. I ought to have hired a PI to find Rosa, or asked Bradley and his ex-SAS contacts to track her down sooner, or find Farai again, but I didn’t, alright?’

‘No.’

She came to a sudden halt under a tree, strained for further acknowledgement, hearing only mournful cooing from distant wood pigeons. The low, sad sounds seemed to speak to her, sympathise with her plight, and compounded the enlightenment. No. It wasn’t because she hadn’t acted swiftly enough, rather how she had acted that was keeping Chris silent.

She took off again. ‘Chris, I had no option. How else would I have got Tom Champion to confess? How would I have found out Farai was in Lancashire? I can’t do this by the book! Dickson has eyes and ears everywhere. I can’t move without him knowing about it. I have Jamie watching me in the office and the house was broken into, months ago. That was down to Dickson. He wanted to know if I had anything on him. I’ve had to behave as if I suspect nothing or, even if I do, I’m unwilling to follow it up. It goes against everything I stand for. I want to catch him out and, if that means crossing a few lines, then I don’t see what other option I have.’

She ran on, trees and pathway now one continuous blur.

‘Listen, as soon as I get something, anything, I’ll use it this time. I won’t squirrel it away to build a case. If we find Tom or Farai, I’ll persuade them to talk. I won’t let this slip away from me. You’ll speak to me then, won’t you? Once Dickson is facing charges? You’ll forgive me and . . . Chris! Please speak to me. I can’t handle your silence and anger, on top of this and the investigation. I can’t juggle all these balls at the same time.
