The Harbour Café was a ten-minute drive from the station and was located, as the name would suggest, on the edge of Belfast Harbour. As Wilson and Browne entered, they saw Davie Best and Eddie Hills sitting at a corner table. The two men were sitting on the same side of the table and two plates of bacon, eggs and pancakes were already set across from them.
Best pointed at the chairs. âGlad you could join us for breakfast.â
Wilson looked at the plate in front of him. It looked good, especially in his current state of hangover. A full Irish breakfast of bacon, eggs, sausage and black pudding was the perfect cure for a hangover. âThanks, Davie, I believe I will.â He started forking egg and bacon into his mouth.
Best smiled, he had expected Wilson to refuse the food. âHow can we help you?â
Browne reluctantly started to follow his bossâs example.
âItâs Eddie really that I want to talk to.â Wilson was enjoying the food. âIt appears that Eddie had a run in with a Lithuanian pimp called Kapas.â
Best looked at Hills. âAnswer the man, Eddie.â
âWho told you that, Mr Wilson?â Hills said.
âKapas himself.â Wilson mopped his plate with the pancake. The food was beginning to prove its worth as a hangover cure.
âNow why would I have done something like that?â Hills asked.
âNo idea, Eddie. You tell me,â Wilson said, sipping the coffee.
Hills was about to answer when Best put a hand on his arm. âWhere are we going with this?â
âKapas was in Belfast with four female prostitutes on a hit-and-run visit,â Wilson said. âThat could very well have pissed off someone who runs their own prostitution racket. That someone could have had a word with Kapas, but maybe the Lithuanianâs Russian connections gave him the balls to resist. Next thing one of his girls turns up dead and dismembered.â
âThe woman in Redburn Country Park was a Lithuanian?â Best asked.
âItâll be in tomorrowâs papers, along with her photo and name.â Bestâs jocular mood had changed.
âThatâs a very serious allegation, Mr Wilson,â Best said.
âIâve alleged nothing. I only laid out a hypothesis that might end up as a line of enquiry.â Wilson pushed his cup away. âThis place is good. Iâm glad you introduced us to it.â
Best stared into Wilsonâs eyes. âLetâs say that a friend of Eddieâs asked him to have a quiet word with this bloke Kapas in relation to interfering with a local enterprise. Letâs say that it ended there. Murder is bad for business.â
âTell that to Mickey Duff,â Wilson remarked.
Best looked at Hills. âDo you know this Mickey Duff character?â
Hills smiled. âI heard about him, but I never met him.â
âIf I want a Chuckle Brothers impersonation, Iâll go to the theatre,â Wilson said. âEddieâs in the frame for the woman until we learn otherwise. I hear he was a dab hand with a chainsaw in Iraq, or was it Afghanistan?â
âYouâve got a bad mouth, Mr Wilson,â Best said. âItâs not good to poke a sleeping bear.â
Wilson stood up. âIâll pay for our breakfasts on the way out.
