Start out from the city of glass:

I came to Italy to get away.

I tried to get away

from being alone.

I made me alone. The city of glass:

for a month, I couldn’t look my face in the mirror.

On the bridge, the crowd is buzzing agog:

a pickpocket trips over a greyhound

as he makes his escape.

A throng rippling above a wash of waves, I stand

on the bridge

as the mass breaks around me.

Yowl afoul. The greyhound

darts away and collides

with a market stall, shaking its mirror.
