Cat didn’t have time to run over to the college before she needed to get ready for the reception. Shauna had grudgingly agreed to be the van driver only after suggesting they walk the few blocks. Showing Shauna that the evening temps were going to dip below freezing, Cat was able to change her mind.

Cat glanced at the cocktail length black dress she wore. It was her go to dress for events like this. She’d add a cute sparkling jacket over the top for tonight to jazz it up a little for the holidays. She glanced at the ring on her left hand. The engagement ring Seth had given her. Not quite as flashy as the one she’d gotten from Michael, but this one had history. And meaning, even if the carats were fewer. She’d been divorced before she’d become a widow a few years ago so she wasn’t sure about the protocol of wearing another man’s ring at a memorial for Michael.

“Screw it.” She wasn’t going to worry about what anyone thought. She hadn’t done anything wrong. Not during the short marriage or after the divorce. She and Seth were good. Well, they would be after they fixed whatever this current fight was about. She was in it for the long haul, and he had to know that. She finished her makeup with a little lipstick and grabbed her clutch. Maybe she’d call a cab and go home early using the emotional tug of the event as an excuse. Especially since Seth wasn’t going to be there.

She met Shauna in the hallway. Her slinky jumpsuit made Cat feel underdressed. “Wow. You look amazing. Maybe I should buy a new cocktail dress.”

“You can always raid my closet. I like shopping way too much.” Shauna flipped her red hair back out of her face. “And I had to have some fun tonight since I’m the DD.”

“We could just hire a taxi.” Cat offered an alternative.

Shauna shook her head. “Not for a few blocks. Besides, it’s part of my job as house mom for the retreat.”

“I wish Seth was coming,” Cat said, and then frowned. She hadn’t meant to sound so needy. “I mean, I know he’s busy, but I enjoy having him with us.”

“Cat, this isn’t just any reception. It’s for Michael. I know he wanted to be there for you, but there’s just so much baggage, especially with the college crowd.” She put her arm around Cat. “I’m here for you tonight so if anyone starts giving you crap, just let me know.”

“You’re the best.” Cat squeezed Shauna quickly. “Let’s go corral our guests. The sooner we get there, the sooner we can leave.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

When they arrived, the library was lit up with white Christmas lights lining the sidewalks and hung all over the front of the building. There was a large spruce in the lobby decorated in red and silver. The reception was being held in the lecture hall on the first floor. Cat paused at the coat check and gave up the parka that had been covering her less than winter formal wear.
