My second-grade teacher, Mrs. Crabtree, was perfection personified. She was young and kind, with a broad smile and big brown eyes like buttons. I adored her.

One day, when the whole class was silently working at our desks, she suddenly called my name and asked me to step out in the hall with her. I felt more than a little nervous, wondering what this could be about. The last thing I wanted in the world was to disappoint Mrs. Crabtree.

She leaned over and looked at me with her chocolate eyes and quietly asked, “Tracy, did you give Cathy your crayons?” Cathy was a girl in my class. Earlier, I had told my mom that it seemed like Cathy’s family didn’t have much money (funnily enough, we didn’t either) and that I had noticed Cathy didn’t have her own crayons. My mom suggested I give her mine and promised that we’d find some others for me.

I sheepishly admitted to Mrs. Crabtree that yes, I had given my crayons to Cathy. I shuddered, certain that I had crossed some unseen boundary line of deviancy. To my surprise, she said, her smile as warm as Christmas, “Tracy, that was a kind thing to do. I’m very proud of you.” I felt the same kind of heat in my face that comes with extreme embarrassment, except this time it was from satisfaction: the teacher that I loved had noticed me.
