The paper had been torn below the word “Poetry.” Spracklin wondered if the whole paper contained something incriminating and he had torn it off so the police would never find it. Then again, it might just be sundry trash.

Spracklin looked up and saw Mrs. Ainslie come in. She paused at the door, gazing at the mess he had made with the garbage on the floor. “Lieutenant,” she said. “I just spoke to my husband on the phone, and he checked the records. The tenant in this room is a Rebecca Napo….” She looked at notes she had scribbled down. “Rebecca Napolitano. She paid by cash. We haven’t seen her for a couple of months, but for the past two months we received cash payment by mail. We still have her damage deposit. Thirty-two dollars.”

Spracklin thought about it. “Do kids often leave before their lease is up?”

“It’s more common than not.” Mrs. Ainslie was catching her breath now. She had held up through a trying evening and now she was beginning to weaken. Her voice broke. “Kids leave and they sublet their rooms to other kids. There’s not a lot we can do to stop it.”

Spracklin knew the horror of what she had seen downstairs was beginning to set in, and it was compounded by the knowledge that the killer had been living in her building. Spracklin thanked her and went downstairs to get his evidence kit. He needed to search the killer’s room for fingerprints.
