Conclusion 409 hodgepodge, at best a mere juxtaposition of "public" and "private" areas. Fortunately builders and their clients were able to transcend the contradictions and create a unified space that faithfully mirrored the African elite. \ ♦ * Fig. 49. The Early Middle Ages in the West Michel Rouche

Face of Merovingian gold coin worth a third of a solidus and struck at Toulouse in the early 7th century. The coin is copied from a Roman model showing Romulus and Remus suckled by a wolf, illustrating the survival of Roman influence, particularly in Aquitania. The coin was struck by the minter Magnus. (Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale, Cabinet des Medailles.)

Introduction by Paul Veyne I HREE centuries have passed. Clovis was baptized in 496 and JL received the insignia of a consul of Rome (that is, of Byzantium, capital of the Roman Empire minus its western provinces, which were occupied by barbarians). In the West, at the dawn of the modern age, the Greco-Roman world was no more. As Machiavelli said, "Men, who had been called Caesar and Pompey, now became Johns and Peters and Matthews." In the Byzantine East the Roman system remained intact until Hellenism emerged as sole master. The West was barbarized—not so much through the blows dealt by the Germans, great admirers of Roman grandeur, as in reaction to their assumption of political power. Humiliated by loss of power, the old aristocracy of notables, the city fathers and civil servants of old Empire, found that life no longer held meaning for them. They gave up the ghost and thereby lost what had made Roman society "civilized": its unconscious desire for self-stylization. Only the Church, for its own ends, retained something of that desire. Barbarism or culture? Societies called barbarian have a culture; those called civilized give themselves one with great effort—for better or worse. Puritanical, aesthetic, highly militarized, and capitalist free- enterprise societies are all "civilized." The drama of the great invasions lay not in the collapse of the imperial apparatus or in the realms of economics or demography but in the obliteration of hitherto crucial social distinctions: between those who read and those who do not, for example, or between those trained to work hard and those not obliged to undergo such training. Such transformations of self are not wrought by schools or other institutions, which are really effects rather than causes, but by what is called, quite inappropriately, education.
