Sam Houston Park was the first urban park to be established in the city. The twenty-acre park was landscaped into a Victorian-style village with footpaths leading past an old mill, across a bridge and over a small stream. The park is home to the Heritage Society and several historic homes. Author’s collection.
In 1954, a group of Houstonians started the Heritage Society. Its purpose continues to be the preservation of the community’s history through historic structures, artifacts and programs that focus on Houston and Harris County. Now home to nineteen acres, Sam Houston Park features live oaks, the Heritage Society Museum and eight historic structures dating back to 1823. The following are historic structures that are now located in Sam Houston Park.
