It was difficult for Kaylein to focus on writing in the days that followed. She didn't want to go to Sam, for it would only have tainted their love with further guilt. Elizabeth said women went to the brothel because there was no convent. In her talks with Lucy, Kaylein had learned that the widow would have become a nun and allowed her children to be raised by the church if only she'd had the option. There were surely other women at Elspeth's who felt the same way. Now more than ever, Kaylein was convinced of the need to see Kinedwyn's priory restored. The local church needed a new income, the villagers needed spiritual guidance, and the vulnerable needed a refuge so they wouldn't turn to places like Elspeth's for salvation. Father Thomas's conservativism could not stand in the way of Kinedwyn's immortal soul any longer. They needed to rebuild the priory.
