OLD WIVES’ TALE

the man bathed in milk and became beautiful,

then a mule, then a man again, then left.

he spread red paint over his lips and went out

dancing. knew i always hated

how we varnish our mouths in blood. light a candle.

remember we had no measuring cups

in ukraine. sectioned out flour by the fistful,

made for lumpy bread but bread all the same.

all the old magic we used to be pretty. slaughtered

goat and cindered village, something

worth something better rise from them ashes. boy,

a glowing candle on that dark floor,

gone out. wore other men’s hair in his hair. say

your lover’s dead name five times

into a mirror. if only the old curses still worked,

i could have swapped his reliquary

for a dibbuk box, poured salt around his sneakers,

sliced his cheek to boil in milk ‘til he muled.
