Chapter

I had always imagined teleporting as being in one place at one moment and suddenly in another place the next. That was what had happened with the portal we had crossed through between Mystic Dunes and the Spectrum Space Center in pursuit of Ben Chalmers’s killers.

This was not, however, what happened when Admiral Avery teleported me from Mystic Dunes to The Rose Garden Guest House. Instead, I was suddenly lifted off the ground like a human-sized rocket and shot high into the sky above Crystal Beach.

Well, above something that looked a lot like Crystal Beach.

One reason I knew it wasn’t really Crystal Beach was that I started screaming the moment my feet left the sand, yet no sound came out of my mouth. Looking down, the ground below me was hazy, its colors all muted and blurred, a bit like watching an old TV set with a poorly tuned antenna. I was flying high above the land, moving in a straight line from where I had been standing by the ocean at Mystic Dunes, now heading toward the center of town, with The Rose Garden lying somewhere between the two.

Mojo was clinging to the leg of my thin cotton pants, his expression one of unbridled horror that I had not seen on the face of a cat before. Yet I could not feel his claws digging into me, so maybe, like sound, pain was not a thing in this in-between place.

Looking past Mojo and tracing the beach northward, I saw where the Shifting Sands Retirement Center was. I noticed a tiny bright spot in the middle of it and instinctively knew it was Ada-Mae. The glowing whiteness was this “other” place’s way of representing the magical power she possessed. In the middle of town, there was another bright spot, and I thought I could approximate that position to where Zoe’s magic shop, The Invisible Cloak, was located. As I watched, the light representing Zoe seemed to pulse with a more purplish color briefly, then turned bright white again.

Looking down, I could see The Rose Garden as it started to get closer, to where I could identify the individual roof of the place growing larger as I descended. The old guest house glowed slightly differently, its insides swirling like oil moving around on the surface of water. A couple of similarly colored spots—Rose and Rodney, I guessed—could be seen less than a ten-minute walk from their guest house. I would not have long to look around once I got inside.

Finally, I glanced back toward Mystic Dunes, seeing if I could get any ideas on whether any magical individuals lived there and whether they glowed in the same way as Ada-Mae or Zoe—or more like the Gantzes and their guest house. What I saw there was something else—a mix of the dark, swirling oil, the white, and even the purple that was like Zoe’s magical light. But what stood out most was that the entire area of Mystic Dunes was covered with this mixture of light.
