We keep important papers. But sometimes there is a fire, or a misspelled name, or a lost suitcase, or a misrepresentation. Sometimes, so simple and sensible a thing as moving a document from one place to another—how logical at the time!—loses it forever. And this, which cannot be explained: it sometimes gets put in the trash by someone trying to help, so much does junk mail look persuasively official, that quality of green ink with black, that spiraling effect along the border.

Still, years later, so many things turn out to have survived.

But as it also turns out, passed from mother to daughter, so much about a document can be misplaced again.
