The secrets of Obi-Wan’s reappearance finally hit Luke during “The Return of Ben Kenobi” (25 July 1982).
After several failed attempts at defeating Luke, Vader has clearly reached the conclusion that he must hit his son where it hurts: the heart. Unlike many characters in comics, Luke doesn’t have a secret identity, which makes him vulnerable to these sorts of attacks. J. Jonah Jameson, the irascible publisher of the Daily Bugle, has been trying to tear Spider-Man down from the very beginning (though he is motivated by jealousy rather than malice). He maintains that Spidey wears a mask because he’s hiding something, but we know that he keeps his identity hidden because his family and friends would be in danger if his enemies knew who he was. Like Peter Parker, Luke is an orphan (as far as he knows, anyway) left in the care of an aunt and uncle. The death of Owen and Beru is not directly related to Luke’s decision to become a hero, but the fact that his enemies are responsible drives the point home. Luke is not motivated by revenge (he already hated the Empire), but it certainly strengthens his resolve and frees him to leave Tatooine to join the good fight.
Vader knows who Leia is (we’ll ignore the fact that he didn’t sense that she was his daughter during their initial encounter, but merely views her as a “part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor”) and probably has a vague idea about Han, but he isn’t likely to see them as Luke’s friends. Not unlike the other members of the Rebellion, they are merely his allies in Vader’s estimation. Therefore, he doesn’t think of them as targets that will hurt his son. He has become aware that Obi-Wan was training Luke, and that there must have been a connection there. Since Obi-Wan is already dead, he cannot kill him again, but he can hurt Luke by playing upon that connection. He knows that Luke will be blinded by his feelings for his master and will follow him to ruin. The idea that an actor could be transformed into an exact duplicate of another person is more than a little absurd, but any chinks in the armor will likely be ignored because Luke wants to believe.
I’m reminded of a particularly ridiculous and infamous episode of The Simpsons, which some fans consider the point when it jumped the shark, in which we discover that the Seymour Skinner we’ve grown to know and love is an impostor. When his commanding officer disappears in Vietnam, he assumes the man’s identity and returns to Springfield to live the life that the real Skinner wanted. This is already ludicrous, but the real sticking point is the fact that his mother just accepts it despite his not resembling her son at all. Luke saw Obi-Wan die, and must realize that there’s no way he could have survived, but he accepts it because he really wants it to be true.
