"That's about it, Special Agent," Detective Pollender sighed. "Other than being first on the scene, I didn't do much."

"You've been a great help, Detective. Absolutely. What happened after you got there?"

"Well, I hate to say it, but both my partner and I took time to throw up before we got the kids out of there. We did our business and hurried back inside. I went for the boy, and my partner Harold went for the girl."

"What condition were they in?"

"I mean, I've never seen kids like that, before or since. She was calmer, except of course for the screaming and humming. Clinging onto herself, in a way. Her hair was wet with sweat; she was sitting up against the wall, all rocking-back-and-forth-like, do you know what I mean?"

"Yeah, I get the gist."

"The boy was…" Tom's voice trailed off for a while, and for a second Callaway wondered if the line had broken. "He was agitated, you know. Breathing heavily. He kept looking for his sister, while drawing deep, rapid breaths."

The line crackled as Tom readjusted his grip on the phone.

"At that moment, you wouldn't have thought them twins. In one sense, he looked so much bigger, so much older. But at the same time, she seemed much more grown up, in a strange way. I don't know, I don't even know what I'm trying to explain—"

"I understand," Callaway assured him. "Please, continue. Anything you can tell me could help."

"Yeah, of course." Tom rummaged through some papers in the background. "Robert Jodrell. He was babysitting, the parents told us later. They were out running some errands, just some normal stuff. I don't know if you have kids, sir, but back in '85, it wouldn't have been unusual for parents to leave their seven-year-olds at home alone. At least these guys had a babysitter. Anyway, it's not like we could interview the neighbor, he was D.O.A. I mean…"

Tom hesitated again, sighing as he likely envisioned the details Callaway until now had only read about.

"I didn't realize this was so difficult to talk about, but the guy's throat was lacerated, and part of his face was—"

"Yeah, I've seen the report. It's something else," Callaway chimed in, to take the pressure off. Even now, almost two decades later, it was clearly painful for the man to recall .

"To think a young boy could do this. He was sitting right there, you know, blood on his hands and face." Tom stopped to clear his throat. "From what I remember, they found scratches and partial bite marks on the guy’s face. I mean, it sounds like the boy tried to eat him."

"Did Ryan say anything while you were there?"

"Yeah, he kept mentioning the monster. He wanted us to check on his sister, said she had cut her leg on some metal scraps in the yard. She was all right, a serious laceration if I recall, but not life threatening. Mostly, we waited for higher ups to come down. We were just patrol officers; we were way out of our depth.
