Chapter 7
I was just slipping into a fresh pair of black, skinny jeans and grabbing my purse when Damon walked through the door, his eyes red rimmed and he still wore the same suit from the night before. I hadnât bothered to call or text him when I realized he wasnât home and looked him up and down as he raked his fingers through his hair.
âI can explain,â he ventured.
âNope.â I shook my head. âNo, you cannot. I donât know whatâs going on with you, but this kind of nonsense wonât wash with me.â
He stepped forward and took my hand. I snatched it back. âIâve been a wreck, Kat. After the other night, with that glamour I put on the detectives⦠Making you go through that has been eating me up inside.â
I considered walking out the door and leaving him to stew but decided that enough was enough. Things between us were coming to a head, and it had to be resolved.
âFine.â I sat on the edge of the sofa and folded my arms with a warning look to Gus to butt out of the argument. âYou think you can explain? Nowâs your chance, but hurry. I have an orchid show to get to.â
He glanced a little wistfully at the coffee machine, but I tapped my foot on the floorboards to make it clear I wouldnât sit around waiting. Swallowing, he dropped to the other sofa with a sigh and cradled his head in his hands.
âEveryone thinks us Carringtonâs are bad news. And maybe theyâre right. We didnât get to where we are now at the firm without twisting a few arms.â He leaned back on the sofa and met my gaze. âDad expects us to go out there and win, and when Bobby brought the lawsuit, he was furious.â
That much I could believe. The man made my skin crawl sometimes.
âI just panicked, you know? We didnât rip the man off, but the project didnât go as planned. But that didnât matter. He had enough money to sink us with legal costs. I didnât want to use magicâ¦â he said biting his lip. âWell, not entirely anyway. The lawyer took the bribe with a little persuasion, and I thought nobody would ever have to know.â
I shook my head, gutted that Damon could think that was a fair enough excuse, but when I opened my mouth to speak, he rushed onward.
âIt was wrong. If Iâd have known what was going to happenâ¦â He took a shuddery breath. âIt was you I let down, Kat. Iâd gladly take the rap for anything to protect you. When we were in with the detectives, all I could think about is how you were caught up in this. There was no way I would let them drag your name through the mud.â
âThis isnât like you.â I frowned. âGhosting me for days. Off on shady deals. Where were you last night?â
His eyes lowered, and he rubbed his hands together. âI got drunk. By the time I got back here, I was too ashamed to come upstairs.
