THORNE, IT transpired, was working that night at one of the theatres in Montmartre, and after an hour or so had to go back upstairs to ready himself to go. Rosemary walked me to the door.
âSo,â I said, conversationally. âThe two of you? Really? For how long?â
Rosemary grinned. In that moment, with her grey-streaked hair, crooked teeth, and worn face, I knew she felt more beautiful than her changeling could ever be. âAges. Years. Since you first spoke to him, and he came back to Paris. He didnât mention it when he saw you last?â
âWe arenât really on the kinds of terms where we discuss our love affairs.â
âYou English and your discretion. He probably didnât give me a second thought, actually, once I was no longer in front of him. Thereâs something missing in Addison at times. Probably the same thing thatâs broken in us.â
âWhat is that, do you think?â
She shrugged. âIf youâd asked me that a few years ago, I would have said a heart. But perhaps thatâs not fair to any of us. Addison is lacking a number of internal organs, thanks to his free-handed trading with goblins, but I donât think a heart is among them. And whatever you feel for Lucie Manette, which I donât mind telling you certainly sounds at least bent if not broken, Iâd never question that what you felt for Ivy was love.â
The bluntness was refreshing. It was how weâd all talked in the Realm: it went as well with the First Language as formality and sarcasm did with English or, these days, revolutionary heat did with French. âYou told me you didnât know how to love.â
âI didnât, then.â
âAnd now?â
She shrugged. âSometimes I think perhaps I do. At other times I know itâs only an act of revenge.â
âPerhaps for us, love is always an act of revenge.â
âThen they win again. They donât want us to love. We need a rebellion they canât win, Memory.â
âA rebellion?â I laughed. âForgive me, but I would be quite content with revenge. I have no faith in rebellionsânot the one out there, and certainly not against fairykind. Frankly, Iâm amazed that you do.â
âYou havenât been here very long, Memory, and you werenât here on Bastille Day. I think it might be possible for France to overthrow their oppressors, yes. And if it can happen hereâ¦â
It couldnât happen here, and it certainly couldnât happen in the Realm, but I wasnât quite mean-spirited enough to say so. Besides, there was no argument of despair I could make that she didnât know perfectly well, and had somehow, enviably, managed not to hear.
âYou say youâre fairly enmeshed in the Revolution,â I said instead. âYou must have some sway with the new government.â
âSome,â she acknowledged. âNot as much as I once did. If youâre asking whether I have any influence over Darnayâs captivity, the answer is no. Iâm not that well-regarded. And if I did try to use what influence I have, I suspect Shadow would be down on me so fast Iâd never write another pamphlet.
