He was dressed in his finest and unbearably nervous. It was rare that he was granted an audience with the queen. She had a busy schedule and only met with people when it was of the utmost importance. Normally, a secretary or some other appointed official would handle matters such as this, but because he was close to the hearts of the princesses, the queen wanted to speak with him personally.

Robin should have felt honored, but the guilt was eating away at him. He betrayed the queen and her daughters. He had betrayed all the men who fought and died in battle over the years. He was working for the enemy because of his own selfish need to be alive.

He gave a forced smile and bowed when Queen Roanna entered. She sat upon her throne; the seat making the tall woman appear smaller than she was, minimizing the grandness of her stature. Her emerald gaze was piercing and her demeanor was unnerving.

“Good day, Sir Robin. It seems we have important matters to discuss.”

He could tell her everything at this very moment and face the consequences. The weight would be lifted and his fate, whatever it may be, would be sealed. Something told him not to. Perhaps it was his survival instinct, the one reminding that the queen could have him imprisoned. He couldn't say a word about King Rydon or the deal that was struck. “I wish to retire, Your Majesty.”

She paused as her gaze wandered over him. His hands were fidgeting behind his back out of anxiousness. He wondered if she could sense that something was wrong.

After a moment, she smiled and nodded. “Of course you do. You have served this country well. Might I ask why you wish to end your promising career?”

“I want to live out my life as normally as I can. In peace. I want to experience things that I haven't had a chance to. I just...want to live.”

“Of course you do,” she said again in the same musing tone. “I expect someday you'll want a family. I understand that must be a difficult thing to do in the army.”

“I fear, if I force myself to fight for much longer, my heart would not be in it, and I would make mistakes at the cost of others.”

“You're one of our best, Robin. We will all be sad to see you go. But your request is granted.”

The compliment brought a flush of red to his cheeks. No strings attached, no final mission to carry out. It was so easy that he worried it may have been a trap. None of this seemed to match what he knew of her reputation. Could it be that the queen had changed her ways? “Thank you, Your Majesty. It has been an honor to serve you.”

Before she had a chance to retract the statement — or to see right through him and directly to the betrayal in motion — he turned to leave, but her voice stopped him.

“I heard you had a brush with death.
