I arrived at Ken’s place shortly after six that evening. By seven, the steaks were marinating and the salad was ready to go. We worked together, tidying the kitchen and setting the table. When we had finished, he led me out onto a deck that was almost as big as the house itself, with sweeping views of the lake and the Cascade mountain range in the distance.

“This is really amazing.”

“I know. We really lucked out. The house belongs to a professor at the University of Washington who’s on sabbatical for a year. I figure that should give me plenty of time to find a more permanent set-up. Jay really likes his school, so I’ll try to stay in the neighborhood.”

“It’s a good part of town. Michael and I don’t live all that far from here. Of course, we don’t have the view or the hot tub.”

“Believe me, any tub I have in the future will be in the bathroom.” He shrugged his shoulders. “I do plan on having windows, but I don’t imagine the view will be anything like this.” He set down his beer. “If you’ll give me a hand, we can enjoy a soak before we eat.”

We pulled the lid off the hot tub and laid it aside. “It just occurred to me that I didn’t bring a suit with me.”

“Not a problem.” Ken made a sweeping gesture with his right arm. “No neighbors to the north. No neighbors to the south. No clothing required. Are you all right with that?”

“I’m just fine with that,” I assured him. I stripped to the buff and eased into the water.

“You really do look like you could be a boxer.” Ken looked at me appraisingly as he fiddled with the controls.

“I boxed in the service for a lark. I won one championship. Michael thinks it’s just too cool for words.”

“Hey, it’s cool.” Ken grinned at me boyishly. “Based on a quick scan of your pecs, your abs and your biceps—well, let’s just say it looks to me like you still train regularly.”

I’ve got to admit, I preened just a little in front of my new friend. I braced my hands on the edge of the tub and pushed myself out of the water. My muscles flexed and Ken’s expression made it clear that he approved. “I do try to make it to the gym whenever I get the chance, but I have to confess that these days I get most of my workouts running around trying to keep up with Michael.”

“I hear that.” He took off his shirt and draped it over the railing on the deck.

“Wow, you clearly haven’t been sitting around going to seed yourself.”

“Oh…thanks.” His cheeks flushed with pink. “I do what I can.”

Whatever his routine, the results were very pleasing to the eye. His body was beautifully proportioned, every muscle precisely defined. The curve of his biceps, the swell of muscle in his forearms, the sculpted muscles of his chest—it was a totally hot package.
