“The camp is in chaos. It is lucky for them Antiochus’ soldiers do not know the true situation. The Maccabees’ struggle would be ended by even the smallest attack.”

Simon and Jonathan watched long enough to see several soldiers gather. Benjamin held his breath as an argument broke out between them.

“If we attack the Maccabees now, we will defeat them once and for all,” declared one guard.

“They are like scorpions, hiding everywhere and stinging whenever we come near. We should leave them alone until they run out of food. Then they will have to come to us!” A second guard shook his fist in the air.

“We must get this information to our commander. He will decide if it is time to attack the Maccabees!” shouted the first guard. He ordered a nearby soldier to return to the commander and tell him what they had overheard.

“Yes!” whispered Benjamin. “It worked!” He followed behind Jonathan and Simon as they headed back to camp.

The Maccabees had been working hard while the boys were gone. The stuffed figures were in place around the blazing campfire. The men and boys hid in nearby bushes, ready to attack. The women and children hid in nearby caves. Benjamin, Devorah, and Shoshana squeezed into a tiny cave a short distance from the camp. Afraid to speak, the children stared into the dark night. The silence was overwhelming.

Benjamin’s legs twitched restlessly. “What if the plan doesn’t work?” he whispered to his sister.

“This plan will work,” Devorah assured him.

“If it doesn’t,” Benjamin said, “what will happen to George Washington? Will he lose to the British? It will be my fault if he loses!” He stood up and headed out of the cave. “I’m going back.”

“What?” Devorah looked at her brother. “Are you crazy?”

“I’ve got to see if my plan is working. I can’t just sit here and wait.”
