I stood at the door, watching MaKenzie on her phone. I was pissed she went against what I had said to her. I didn’t want Nova to kill anyone. Once you start killing, you keep killing. That’s not the life I want for her. She was innocent when it came to this street shit. The less she knew, the better. It was a different story when it came to Kenzie and Kay. We trained them the same way we trained the Goons, but I didn’t want that for My Future.

“Hey, Aunt Rissa. How are you?” Kenzie said, putting the phone on speaker.

“I’m fine, baby. How are you guys holding up down there?”

“We’re doing all right. We will be heading that way tomorrow. Everything has been handled on this end. We will have to come back down to clean the house out completely, but other than that, we are pretty much set to go,” she said into the phone.

“That’s good to hear, baby.”

“Auntie, I called to speak to Nova. Would you put her on the phone, please?”

“Yeah, hold on a second.” The sound of her putting the phone down could be heard. My mama was the only person I knew that still had a house phone. A couple of minutes passed before the phone was picked back up and Nova was on the line.

“Hello,” she said softly in the phone. MaKenzie looked at me with a look of defeat in her eyes. I told her that Nova wan’t about that life. Now I was glad she did call. She wouldn’t push her to do something that she knew she wasn’t capable of.

“Hey, Nova. This is MaKenzie, Scony’s sister.” She stood quietly waiting for Nova to respond.

“Okay, I’m sorry about your grandmother. My condolences to you guys,” she said quietly.

“Thank you. I know you don’t know me, but I heard about what happened to you and I wanted to reach out and talk to you. My sister kind of heard the conversation that you were having with G earlier and I need to know if you were serious about what you said.”

“Am I serious? You’re kidding me, right? Did Grant have you to call me to try to change my mind? If so, tell him that he can kiss my ass! There will be no talking me out of shit!” Gone was the soft spoken woman that I fell in love with and in her place was Satan himself. I looked at Scony and he had a look of surprise on his face.

“No, no, no! G didn’t have me to call you at all. As matter of fact, he was against it. I called because I wanted to hear from you what happened to you. Would you mind telling me, please.” Kenzie looked at me with that smirk on her face again. I wanted to see if Nova’s tone was gonna go back to the one that I knew oh so well. It didn’t.

“To make a long story short, my supposed to be best friend hit me over the head with a bat and put me in a muthafuckin’ trunk.
