After less than five minutes driving over the speed limit, Patch pulled over and signalled to the young women that they were on the move. They jumped out of the Land Rover and Patch led them down a narrow alleyway, and out onto a busy street not far from the train station.

‘Right, quickly, in here.’ He guided the pair to the doorway of a neat little Chinese restaurant, ushering them inside and followed behind. The two women were immediately led to a table in front of the large window by a waiter, and before they had time to even glance at a menu, two plates of steaming noodles were put in front of them, as well as two bottles of cola and a large bowl of prawn crackers. They were encouraged to eat. Lorna was happy to oblige; she was starving. Rhian was far from hungry, but was more than willing to play along.

Patch leaned over the table and pointed across the road to the busy high street. ‘In the next couple of minutes your shadow will be storming down that road with a face like thunder. You two just act normal and we’ll see what happens. After you’ve finished your lunch you can make your way to the train station. By the way, the Chinese food here is the best in Birmingham.’

He then left the women to their noodles. He walked into the kitchen and hugged Chin, another old army friend, and owner of the restaurant.

‘Thanks,’ he said. ‘I owe you one.’
