General Commissioners

An unpaid local body of persons of good standing appointed by the Lord Chancellor or, in Scotland, by the Secretary of State for Scotland, to hear appeals against income tax, corporation tax, and capital gains tax assessments or matters of dispute arising from them. General Commissioners can appoint their own clerk, often a lawyer, who can advise them on procedure and legal matters. Compare Special Commissioners.
