Chapter 7
I looked over and there stood an imperious woman, dressed in an antebellum gown, something straight out of another era. I half expected to hear the sound of cannon fire. She glared at us as if we were part of Shermanâs army. I certainly felt more than a bit intimidated.
âAnd why did you call me,â she added.
âExcuse us,â I said. âIâm Sam, and these two are Mara and Tessa. We called you because weâre looking for a particular ghost.â
âIâm Lady Cromartie, and I built the original hotel on this spot. I will tell you right now that I do not suffer witches who jerk me out of my restful sleep.â
âWeâre sorry,â Mara said. âBut we do need some information.â
âAnd while weâre witches, weâre not bad people,â Tessa added.
âHereâs why we called you,â I said. âIâm accused of committing a murder in this hotel. I didnât do it, but that doesnât seem to faze anyone. So, weâre looking to see if a ghost might have done the deed.â
âA ghost? Highly unlikely,â Lady Cromartie said. âBut you can never tell with ghosts. Some of them can be rather difficult at times. Which ghost are you talking about?â
âThe Gambling Man,â Mara said. âIt seems many people have encountered him, and they believe heâs capable of such a deed.â
âThe Gambling Man?â Lady Cromartie asked. âYou must be kidding. Heâs...well, let me show you.â
Lady Cromartie disappeared, and I wondered if she had ever been there at all.
âShe was here, wasnât she?â Tessa asked.
âShe was,â Mara said. âBut she wasnât terribly helpful. And I donât think she liked what we did.â
Before I could voice my opinion, Lady Cromartie reappeared, and this time she had a man in tow, a smallish, well-dressed man with a hang-dog look. He reminded me of a henpecked husband.
âHere he is,â Lady Cromartie said. âThe, quote, Gambling Man.â
âYouâre the Gambling Man?â Tessa asked.
The ghost nodded. âMy real name is Clyde Jones, but everyone called me the Gambling Man, on account I liked to play poker.â
âThen, you werenât some big-time criminal, who bootlegged whiskey off fast boats that landed on the beaches,â I said.
âOh, no, no, that wasnât me. Those were the gentlemen who lost their money to me. They might have been great smugglers, but they had no idea how to play poker.â The ghost laughed.
âNow,â Lady Cromartie said to the Gambling Man. âHave you ever harmed anyone in this inn?â
âNo, no, I havenât. Although, there was a couple who tried to steal some of the antique doorknobs. I did throw a scare into them, but then, they were thieves. Iâm a gentleman, and gentlemen donât abide thieves.â
âSatisfied?â Lady Cromartie asked.
I looked at Tessa and Mara, and we all knew the Gambling Man could not have killed Jessica Jensen. It was simply beyond him.
âYes,â I said. âClyde here is innocent.â
âThank you,â the Gambling Man said. âBut youâre not going to tell everyone about me, are you? I rather enjoy my reputation as some sort of rough rogue.â
âYour secret is safe with us,â Tessa said.
