CHAPTER SEVENTEEN-LUCAS

Aine insists on privacy, so I take her to my room. Closing the door, she folds her arms in front of herself.

“Are you sure of your choice?” She isn’t judging. Aine is coming from a place of knowledge. I know her words don’t have a double meaning or a hidden one. It still irritates me to be questioned, but I also need to remember she will be making up the next committee.

“Yes.”

She nods and accepts my response. “I didn’t want to bring this up at the table with Ella present, but the girls aren’t doing so good Lucas. I don’t know how much more time they have.”

I run my hands across my face. I knew they were being kept there, but to think of anything happening to them had my stomach twisting. Ella would be devastated if either of them was hurt.

“What’s happened to them?” I need to know if we can save them or are we better off letting them go?

“I’m not entirely sure but they have been left in Henry’s hands. Mark was the one who came to me. He asked me if I had a way to reach you then now would be the time.”

Mark is my father’s servant. What would prompt him to reach out to Aine? What was Henry doing to those girls?

“Henry has rooms under the shed. That’s where they are being held.” Aine looks uncomfortable and I don’t blame her.

“Both of them are being judged at the gathering for conspiring against Henry.”

I shake my head. My father was showing his true self. “If they are, then they will be alive.” That had to count for something.

“Should be alive, Lucas. I just wanted to inform you, so you can tell Ella in a gentler way.”

“I won’t be telling her, none of you will.” I drive each word home so Aine hears me.

“I don’t think that is wise.”

I want to reach out and grab Aine around her throat. “I don’t care if you think it’s wise or not. I said she will not be told.”

Aine bristles but nods her head. “Your word is final.”

“Yes, it is.” I state hoping to drive home my point. We would save Hannah and Jessie at the gathering. But Ella having that knowledge now, would be tormented. I would deal with her anger later. She didn’t need to suffer unnecessarily.

“I also wanted to talk about the matter of Henry.”

I didn’t want to talk anymore. The thought of Ella finding out about Hannah and Jessie had my stomach quivering. I couldn’t let that happen, it would torture her to know they were being hurt.

“He needs to be fully removed.”

“I will think about it.”

Aine isn’t satisfied. “I left that book for you, Lucas. So you would understand the power you could wield.”

That surprises me, I had thought it was George. “You want me to hang Henry because he is gay?”

Aine shrugs. “You have a reason and the power. Why not?”

“No.” I wasn’t going to do it. We had to come up with a more fitting punishment.
