The stars had risen by the time Thomas had perused the last of the archaeological volumes still stacked atop the desk. He yawned and stretched; then, with a single powerful leap, he landed back on the windowsill. After making certain that Hasheptiri was not in sight—doubtless, the E-Gyp cat was making yet another nighttime foray in search of new slaves—he settled onto the narrow perch of worn wood and reluctantly conceded defeat.

How could he ever have hoped to find a solution to this dilemma when Selena, who was far cleverer than he, could not do so? He sighed and looked up at the stars, which seemed to twinkle back at him with mocking glee. Had E-Gyp slave cats once gazed up at that same night sky, dreaming of the day they might be free to sleep and hunt as they wished?

That same night sky.

Thomas’ green eyes widened. Abruptly, he turned tail and bounded back onto the professor’s desk, scattering papers everywhere. Paying no heed to the disarray, he swiftly pawed open the last book on the stack and began searching for one particular illustration. Perhaps he might have stumbled onto the reason for Hasheptiri’s great powers, after all. And if he were right, maybe there was a way to reverse Selena’s botched spell ... or, at least, to counteract it.

A moment later, he had found the page he sought. He studied the picture for a long while, and then gave a soft mrmph of satisfaction. He had been right. Now, all that remained was explaining his discovery to Selena, so that they could concoct a plan of action.
