PAPERS

Paint, print or sponge colour over several sheets of paper and leave to dry. Place cut or torn paper shapes, strands of thread, plant material etc onto the fabric. Position the painted paper face down on top of the fabric and iron to transfer the colour. The particular items placed on the material will act as a resist and will be depicted by white silhouettes. Overprinting in a variety of colours with different arrangements of shapes will produce an amazing assortment of patterns. Take care to consider whether the shapes are sympathetic to the proposed design. Hard-edged shapes would be suitable for an abstract grid design but may not be appropriate for a more impressionist picture.

Painted and patterned papers can be cut and placed colour face down before positioning other painted papers on top. In this way an amazing number of patterns can be created. A little more time may have to be spent on the ironing process to allow the heat to penetrate all the layers of paper. Grids, frames within frames, patchworks or floral patterns can provide a challenging basis for stitching.

WAX RESIST

Some types of transfer fabric paints are more fluid than others. This may be a limiting factor for textural or block printing but would be advantageous for use with wax resist. Household candles can be drawn with a variety of effects on paper, an activity many of you will remember from junior school. A white candle mark is difficult to distinguish on white paper unless looked at in a certain light. However, a short time experimenting on scrap paper will help you gain a little more control. Faint pencil-marked shapes or patterns could help as guidelines. Remains of coloured candles may give you a pale-coloured mark.
