Chapter 9

Gorilla Fighting

Mandy peered between the branches and spotted Carmel, ears pinned to her head. Her whiskers fluttered wildly and her head shifted nervously. She sniffed the air; her body shook.

“What’s wrong?” Mandy asked.

“Well, it’s—uh nothing, I guess.”

“If nothing bothered you, your ears would be pointed up, not pasted to your head. If you’re not afraid, why are your whiskers and head jittering? If I didn’t know any better I’d figure you licked sugar cubes.”

“I did have a lot of cake.” Carmel smiled and clasped her front paws together. The tension in her body faded. Mandy waited for her to look around. Instead, Carmel kept her wide eyes riveted on her.

“Guess I’ll have to wait for a straight answer,” Mandy said.

“It is a straight answer—arrow straight, or something like it.”

This set of branches had a tropical feel to them. A cluster of palm trees stood farther down the branch. Their brown trunks contrasted with the dark pine fir, though the palms fronds blended well. They were tall, but not tall enough to get her and Carmel up to the next level. Patches of fungus and moss covered the area. Deep brown grass lined other portions. Mandy felt moisture in the air. She smelled mildew on the plants as she reached down to touch the wet leaves. “Okay, where are we?”

“We’re in a Christmas tree.”

“What branch of the tree?”

“Huh? Well, there are many different…Sometimes I’m not sure which branch we’re on. They change from time to time.”

“Take a guess. Have you ever seen a branch that looks similar to this one? And if you have, what should we expect?”

Carmel chuckled nervously. Her ears went down and she looked around wide-eyed. “It could be, but I’m not sure. There have been times when…”

“Out with it. We’re wasting time.”

“We’re on a jungle branch.”

“What can we expect from this jungle branch?”

“I’m not really sure. Like I said, things change so much from branch to branch. Sometimes the animals we meet are friendly, and sometimes…”

Branches shook. Mandy looked back and forth and tried to spot the disturbance. She didn’t see anything. The area where the palm trees stood barely moved compared to the other side of the branch, which shook wildly. Carmel pulled the collar from her belt and quickly fastened it around her neck.

Mandy spotted the reason for the shaking, a pair of gorillas’ knuckle-walking, in their direction. Carmel grabbed her by the arm and virtually tossed Mandy onto her back.

“Beenemy?” Mandy asked.

“Beenemy.”

They dashed down the branch toward the cluster of palms. Mandy looked back to the pair of silverback gorillas still coming their way, though the gap between them widened.

Carmel stopped abruptly at the base of the palm trees. Fortunately, Mandy’s tight grip of the collar prevented her from being catapulted over Carmel’s head. They looked at the palms as they decided which one to climb. The trunks of the palms were angled, not straight up like a tree. Branches began to shake. Mandy looked back and saw the gorillas coming closer.

“Better hold on tight,” Carmel said.
