Chapter Ten

Jasmine sat in the living room with her daughters Jackie, and Renee, discussing their holiday plans.

“As long as I’m not Mary or the wicked innkeeper this year, I’m good,” Renee said while wrapping a gift Jasmine purchased for staff. They would pass these out at the annual Christmas party.

Jackie released a sigh. “I’ll narrate this year instead of David.”

Silence.

“What?” Jackie looked at Renee. “You don’t think I can do a better job than him?”

“No. You can’t. Which is why he always narrates. Bella always sings. The rest of us stay in our lanes and handle the other parts.”

Jackie rolled her eyes at her sister and looked at Jasmine. “What do you think, Mama?”

“All of my children are gifted and talented in a variety of ways. I love and appreciate you all,” she answered judiciously.

Jackie frowned.

Renee smirked and placed the gaily wrapped gift onto a growing pile.

“You realize that didn’t answer my question, right Ma?” Jackie said.

“I gave you my answer.” Jasmine smiled at her. “Works for me.” She took a sip of sweet tea and picked up another gift. “What did you get for Quinn this year?”

“Real smooth, Mom,” Jackie grumbled before perking up. “He wanted this watch that does all kinds of medical stuff. A doctor at the hospital he interned wore one. Not that he would ever use it in a Pack clinic, but until he finishes his residency with the humans.” She shrugged. “The real question is, what is he getting me? Has he said anything to you?” She looked at Renee.

Renee turned aside with a devilish grin. “I’m not telling you about private conversations between me and my brother.”

Jackie pointed at her. “He talked to you. I knew it. What did you say?”

“I said, I’m not telling you about private conversations between me and my brother.” Renee gave her the eye.

They stared at each other.

Jackie relented. “Will I like it?”

Renee shrugged as her lips curled into a smile.

Jackie grabbed another gift while staring at Renee. “Adams’ taking Bella to Hawaii for another honeymoon.”

“Why do they bother labeling their trips?” Renee said. “How many honeymoons have they had?” She looked at Jasmine.

“Have no idea.” Keeping up with her children’s adventures would be a full-time job. She preferred the snippets they provided.

“Third or fourth,” Jackie said. “I think it’s sweet. Never thought Adam had it in him to be so thoughtful.”

“Just takes the right woman to settle a man down. Ask me how I know,” Renee said with feeling.

Neither Jasmine nor Jackie touched that landmine. Before mating with Renee, Storm never lived with Pack and hadn’t been eager to join. Borderline feral, he came to the States to kill Hawke for an unsubstantiated crime. Challenging Hawke meant taking on Asia as well, who had a long list of impressive body counts when she worked as an assassin for the Liege. Storm fought them both and almost defeated them when Grandfather stopped the fight, announcing Storm was his grandson. Pure Black Wolf with the stamina of legends. Impossible to defeat.
