Chapter Five

After nearly three weeks of dates, sleepovers, and constant texting—or at least as much as their jobs allowed—Oscar didn’t think anything of Nathan inviting him over for dinner on a Saturday. It was extra special since Nathan worked most Saturdays, and Oscar was looking forward to a weekend night together with his boyfriend.

He knew something was up as soon as Nathan opened the door. It wasn’t because Nathan was wearing slacks and a sweater—he’d told Oscar they’d be having a fancy in-home candle-lit dinner, so they should both dress nice—and it wasn’t because his apartment was decked in decorations—that was just Nathan. It was because there were other people in the apartment, clothes business casual like Oscar’s, sipping drinks and talking.

Oscar froze in the doorway, staring over Nathan’s shoulder at the people. At his friends. At the party obviously taking place. At the disruption of his plans for a peaceful night in with his boyfriend. Frustration boiled in his gut.

“Surprise!” Beaming, Nathan grabbed Oscar’s hand and tugged him over the threshold so he could kick the door shut and wrap an arm around Oscar’s waist. “You said that you never got to have a holiday party with your friends, so I organized one!”

Nathan was shining so bright all the other stars in the sky were ashamed. Nathan was beautiful, and Oscar wasn’t going to be the one to dim that glow. He swallowed down the biting words that wanted to tear out of his throat. It was only a party. One party. Nothing fancy and ridiculous and over-the-top. He could handle one holiday party, couldn’t he?

“Thank you.” He tried to smack a smile on his face, but Nathan frowned and yanked Oscar to the side so they couldn’t be seen by the milling guests.

Nathan slipped his arms around Oscar, holding him close and peering up at him. “What’s wrong? Don’t you like it?”

Oscar grimaced and searched for a smile that was more honest than the one he’d managed before. “It’s fine. It’s a very nice thought.” He kissed Nathan’s forehead and then those soft, soft lips. “I’m just a little thrown off. I was really looking forward to a long night in with you.” Which was the truth, if not the brunt of it.

Nathan pouted. “I’m sorry. I should have thought… But this’ll be fun, right? I mean, Christmas only comes once a year, and after the holidays, then we can spend many long weekend nights together, right?” He gave a little squeeze of Oscar’s waist.

“Of course.” Oscar kissed him again. “Sorry, I just wasn’t prepared for a party. I’m sure it’ll be fun.” Another kiss, but this time he left his forehead resting against Nathan’s. “And I get to spend the evening with you. But with our friends as well.” He grinned, almost managing to talk himself into it. “I’m still spending the night, aren’t I?”

The concern washed off Nathan’s face. “You better be.”

“Come on, then.” One final kiss and he gently separated them. “Let’s get this party started.
