If the dead made it all the way through the Underworld, they’d reach the Hall of Final Judgment. Here, they stood in front of the god Osiris and forty-two divine judges. First they had to correctly name all forty-two judges. (That’s a lot of names to remember!) Then they were questioned about everything they were suspected of having done wrong in life. The Book of the Dead gave instructions on what to say. Spell 125, the longest in the book, was a “Negative Confession” to recite. It listed forty-two crimes the dead had to have not done, such as:
